| Summary, etc. | During the early phase of the Reformation, during which Pomeranian dukes made different decisions regarding confession, a uniform policy was followed from the 1530s onwards. In 1534, Lutheran confession was introduced in Pomerania. Although the last duke had made efforts to strengthen Lutheranism with the 1634 constitution, the division of Pomerania between Sweden and Brandenburg again led to different developments in the two parts of the country. The East became more diverse in its confession practices than the orthodox Lutheran West, due to the tolerance of Jews, the acquisition of Catholic territories on the border to Poland, and the invitation of French and Dutch Huguenots by the Calvinist ruler. |
