| Summary, etc. | Profondément choqué par les horreurs de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, G. Bouthoul décida, en 1945, de fonder une nouvelle discipline, la polémologie, étude scientifique des conflits. Partant du constat que le phénomène guerre est une permanence dans la vie des hommes, elle a pour objectif de déterminer les véritables fonctions de la violence guerrière sur le corps social. Dépassant les causes immédiates, en particulier politiques, elle s’appuie sur les méthodologies de la sociologie en développant une approche pluridisciplinaire du phénomène. Dans son Traité de polémologie, Bouthoul, appliquant les règles de la nouvelle discipline, tente ainsi de démontrer que la guerre est avant tout une des manifestations des déséquilibres socio-économiques qui peuvent apparaître dans une société. Malheureusement, ses travaux n’ont pas suscité assez de débats pour que la polémologie devienne une discipline vivante. Aujourd’hui, le Traité de polémologie ainsi que les autres écrits de Bouthoul semblent bien seuls pour que puisse se développer une véritable étude de la guerre. |

| Summary, etc. | In 1945, G. Bouthoul, profoundly shocked by the honors of World War II, decided to establish a new discipline : the scientific study of conflicts – polémologie. Based on the observation that the phenomenon « war » is a permanence in men’s life, polémologie aims at determining the real functions of war violence in the social body/fabric. Going beyond the immediate causes, in particular political ones, polémologie relies on the methodologies of sociology and on a multidisciplinary approach to the phenomenon. In his Traité de polémologie, Bouthoul, applying the rules of this new discipline, tried to demonstrate that war is, above all, one of the manifestations of the socio-economic imbalances that at times appear in a society. Unfortunately, Bouthoul’s works have not been much debated, and polémologie has not succeeded in becoming a living discipline. Nowadays, it seems that Bouthoul’s Traité and other worlds have not generated a sufficient number of followers to allow for the development of a genuine science of studying war. |
