| Summary, etc. | Cet article analyse les évolutions de la relation franco-britannique depuis la fin de la Guerre froide à travers le prisme de sa dimension européenne. Cette coopération s’est développée en réponse à l’émergence de nouvelles menaces sur le continent européen, mais elle est restée longtemps limitée par des divergences profondes sur l’intégration européenne et des priorités bilatérales différentes (couple franco-allemand, special relationship). Le sommet de Saint-Malo a constitué un tournant en faisant de l’Europe un défi plutôt qu’un obstacle pour la coopération franco-britannique, rapidement décrite comme un « moteur » pour l’Europe de la défense. Les récentes tensions entre Paris et Londres n’ont pas modifié en profondeur cet état de fait, et le rapprochement franco-allemand a en ce sens moins cherché à contourner l’Entente cordiale qu’à la renforcer en réaction au dernier élargissement. |

| Summary, etc. | This article analyses the evolutions of the Franco-British cooperation after the Cold War, with a particular emphasis on its European dimension. This bilateral cooperation has developed in response to the emergence of new threats on the continent, but it has long remained constrained by diverging approaches to European integration and different bilateral priorities ( couple franco-allemand, special relationship). Europe has however turned from an obstacle into a challenge for the Franco-British cooperation in 1998, to the point that their bilateral relationship soon became heralded as a « Franco-British engine ». None of the recent tensions seems to have fundamentally changed this rationale. Rather than an alternative to the Entente cordiale, the French tactical rapproachment with Germany in 2003 can therefore be interpreted as an attempt to widen the engine in reaction to the fifth Enlargement. |
