| Summary, etc. | Fondé sur une enquête qualitative consacrée à la sociologie de l’engagement des militaires issus de l’immigration extra-européenne, cet article revient sur les difficultés méthodologiques spécifiques que pose aux chercheurs cet objet de recherche. Présentant la double particularité d’être socialement illégitime et institutionnellement sensible, l’évocation de la diversité (ethnique, religieuse) soulève dans le champ militaire français un certain nombre d’obstacles que nous avons tenté d’identifier et de surmonter. Outre les effets de la matrice républicaine qui préconise le colour blindness, notre contribution donne des repères et des outils méthodologiques pour optimiser la qualité des données recueillies dans cet environnement professionnel aux valeurs très spécifiques (culture du secret, impérativité de la cohésion). |

| Summary, etc. | This article is based on a qualitative research focusing on the enlistment in the military of French young people having an Extra-European immigration background. It aims at exploring the methodological difficulties of this specific research object. The mention of the ethnic and religious diversity of the French military generates multiple types of tensions because it is both socially illegitimate and institutionally sensitive. In this contribution, we are intending to identify and overcome this issue. This research not only puts the emphasis on the effect of the republican matrix (colour blindness) on the research achievement, but it also gives some methodological tools allowing us to improve the data collection’s quality in a very specific professional environment (culture of secrecy, objective of cohesion). |
