| Summary, etc. | Cet article examine la question très actuelle des divisions internes de l’Ukraine, sous l’angle de la géographie culturelle. Les journalistes, les chercheurs ou les acteurs politiques divisent volontiers l’Ukraine en plusieurs régions culturelles dont les limites sont calées sur d’anciennes frontières impériales ou nationales. Ces lectures jouent de la similitude entre certaines cartes électorales, linguistiques ou politiques. L’étude des symboles et monuments dans deux villages de l’Ukraine occidentale de part et d’autre d’une ancienne frontière historique permet de critiquer ces interprétations univoques et de mettre en lumière l’ambivalence des espaces d’identification et des rapports à l’histoire dans ces communautés villageoises. |

| Summary, etc. | Our contribution, rooted in cultural geography, examines the highly topical issue of Ukraine’s internal divisions. Journalists, scholars, and political players readily divide Ukraine into various cultural regions whose boundaries often recycle/retrace former imperial or national borders. These interpretations/readings/ decisions/play off the similarity between certain electoral, linguistic, and politic maps. By studying the symbols and monuments in two villages on opposite sides of a historical border in western Ukraine, we question these univocal interpretations and shed light on the ambivalence of spaces of identification and the ties these village communities entertain with history. |
