| Summary, etc. | Cet article s’intéresse à la notion de circulation dans Roxana de Daniel Defoe, envisagée comme une métaphore centrale dans la construction de l’héroïne-narratrice et du récit lui-même. Les multiples références à la navigation, à l’exotisme et au commerce sont analysées pour montrer la mobilité sociale et géographique de Roxana, et révéler ses changements constants d’identité, ainsi que son évolution double, à la fois dans le monde de la prostitution et dans celui des affaires. L’étude explore ce double statut, et montre que le roman se construit à partir d’une opposition entre la circulation des personnes, des objets et des récits, et les situations de stase et de blocage. |

| Summary, etc. | This essay investigates the notion of circulation in Daniel Defoe’s Roxana as a founding metaphor for the construction of the character-narrator and the narration itself. It analyses the references to navigation, exoticism and commerce that abound in Defoe’s novel to describe Roxana’s social and geographical mobility, and outlines her constant changes of identity, as well as her dual evolution in the world of prostitution and that of business. The study explores this double status, and shows that the novel is built on the contrast between the circulation of people, objects and narratives, and situations of stasis and blockage. |
