| Summary, etc. | N’importe quel est un item à choix libre (FCi) employé depuis le début du XIXe siècle. Nous émettons l’hypothèse que le figement de sa forme n’est pas encore parvenu à son stade terminal puisque certains locuteurs l’utilisent encore avec une préposition insérée entre n’importe et quel, mais également car il peut être employé depuis peu dans des phrases épisodiques. Dans ce type de phrases, il s’éloigne de la notion de FCi, car il ne quantifie plus sur des individus possibles. |

| Summary, etc. | ‘N’importe qu-’ : diachrony and interpretation N’importe quel is a free choice item (FCi) used since the beginning of 19th century. We show that n’importe quel is not completely frozen, since some French speakers insert a preposition between n’importe and quel. Moreover, this indefinite determiner has appeared recently in episodic sentences. In such a context, n’importe quel is different from ‘ordinary’ FCis due to the fact that it does not quantify over possible individuals. |
