| Summary, etc. | Picard and French : What their Grammar Tells Us about Their Sociolinguistic Status For Éloy (1997), two conditions must be met in order for Picard to be considered to be a language. First, it must be perceived to be a linguistic variety that is distinct from French. Second, this perception must be based on an empirical distinction between the two varieties. This article analyzes vowel epenthesis. The complexity of the system that is revealed, combined with the fact that a Picard literary standard that is autonomous from that of French is developing, leads us to conclude that Picard is an autonomous language. |
