| Summary, etc. | La liaison du français constitue un cas de ce que l’on appelle « opacité » en phonologie. Les faits d’opacité sont intéressants, d’une part, en ce qu’ils posent des problèmes tant au modèle génératif classique qu’à son successeur non dérivationnel, la théorie de l’optimalité, et, d’autre part, en ce qu’ils sont un facteur remarquable de variation, comme le montre la liaison dite facultative. Selon nous, c’est l’absence de prise en compte de celle-ci qui est à la source des problèmes posés par l’opacité, dont la solution passe par l’explication de la variation qui lui est intrinsèquement attachée. Nous proposons d’expliquer la variation fondée sur l’opacité à travers la définition d’un petit nombre de « stratégies structurales » visant à la détermination d’une représentation sous-spécifiée de la variable, d’une part ; d’autre part, comme le montrent clairement les données françaises, le choix de telle ou telle variante est motivé par l’existence d’un rapport naturel entre chaque stratégie structurale et la « stratégie sociale » qui lui est associée. |

| Summary, etc. | Phonological opacity and French liaison. From underspecified variables to motivated variants French liaison is a case of so-called ‘opacity’ in phonological literature. Opacity is an interesting phenomenon since (i) both classical generative phonology and non-serial theories such as optimality theory fail to provide a straightforward account of this phenomenon, (ii) it is a crucial source of variation, as witnessed by optional liaison. We argue that the theoretical problems raised by opacity arise from the fact that variation is not directly taken into consideration by current research, and that any account of opacity should combine with an explanation of variation. Opacity-based variation is assumed to follow from a small number of well defined ‘structural strategies’ which seek to determine an underspecified representation of the variable; furthermore, as clearly shown by French data, the selection of one variant is motivated by a natural relationship between each structural strategy and the ‘social strategy’ associated with it. |
