Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Interactions between discourse profile and argument structures : The case of the verbs of surprise and respect This paper proposes a functional approach for the analysis of the argument structures of verbs belonging to the fields of surprise and respect. The study of the syntactic and semantic valence of the verbs is completed by a systematic analysis of their discourse profile. The results show that the verbs of the fields of surprise and respect have different features related, on the one hand, to syntactic and semantic restrictions and, on the other hand, to the speaker’s choice made between active, passiveor middle voice. Two main mechanisms are identified that reflect the articulation between the syntactic and semantic levels and discourse choices : argument splitting or fusion ( They surprised me with this show vs. He hated Duguesclin, but he respected his courage). The paper also proposes syntactic and semantic criteria (pronominalization using en, semantic opposition in terms of interior vs exterior or part vs whole) to better define the syntactic status of the passive complement introduced by de for the verbs in both fields. |
