| Summary, etc. | Jusqu’en janvier 2021, le système monétaire cubain a été composé de deux monnaies nationales, l’une forte appelée peso convertible, forme indigénisée du dollar auquel il s’est substitué en 2004, et l’autre faible appelée peso cubano. Ce système était unifié par une émission centralisée et par une convertibilité réciproque garantie par l’État. Bien que ces deux monnaies aient monopolisé les fonctions de compte et de paiement, elles ne permettaient ni de compter ni de payer les mêmes biens et services dans les mêmes lieux, entre les mêmes personnes. Alors que l’idéal-type de la monnaie moderne a pour principale caractéristique de traverser différentes sphères d’échange, on peut donc envisager ces deux sous-systèmes comme deux sphères de transactions monétaires délimitées par des protocoles monétaires propres à chaque site. La doble moneda cubaine se rapprochait en cela de certains systèmes monétaires dits « traditionnels », dont la multiplicité des unités de compte a révélé des frontières entre les différents groupes sociaux d’usagers. Je décris ici les pratiques sociales liées à cette double monnaie à partir d’une enquête ethnographique multisituée et montre que leurs buts essentiels se situaient dans le passage d’une sphère de transaction à une autre, lorsque les activités des usagers franchissaient les frontières monétaires où se jouaient les phénomènes de conversion. |

| Summary, etc. | Until January 2021, the Cuban monetary system consisted of two national currencies, a strong one called the peso convertible, the indigenized form of the dollar which it replaced in 2004, and a weak one, called the peso cubano. This overall system was unified by a centralized issuance and a state-guaranteed reciprocal convertibility. Although these two currencies monopolized the account and payment functions for internal transactions, they did not allow the same goods and services to be counted or paid for in the same places, between the same people. As the central characteristic of the modern ideal of money is that it moves across different spheres of exchange, we can therefore think of these two sub-systems as two spheres of monetary transactions delimited by site-specific monetary protocols. In this respect, the Cuban doble moneda was similar to certain so-called traditional monetary systems, in which the multiplicity of units of account made it possible to mark the boundaries between the different social groups of users. Drawing a multi-sited ethnographic survey, I describe here the social practices linked to this dual currency. I show that the fundamental issues of dual currency lay in the passages between the spheres of transactions, when users’activities crossed the monetary borders where conversions played out. |
