| Summary, etc. | Si on se contente de l’appréhender dans la sécheresse de sa chronologie et si on s’en tient à une approche purement factuelle de la réalité, l’institution du prince telle qu’elle se conçoit en France au Grand Siècle, avec ses codes, ses normes et ses modes de fonctionnement, n’a rien d’une aventure. Mais si on replace cette période dans l’histoire élargie des représentations, des réalités mentales, c’est tout un imaginaire éducatif qui s’offre à l’interprétation, l’aventure constituant un point d’accroche particulièrement utile pour appréhender la manière dont les années de formation de Louis XIII et de Louis XIV ont fait signe en leur temps. Ce sont ainsi deux récits imagés dont hérite la postérité, deux storytellings riches en péripéties qui dessinent un double portrait de la dynastie bourbonienne. Celui d’un roi aventureux, Louis XIII ; et celui d’un roi aventurier, Louis XIV. |

| Summary, etc. | Obviously, if we examine treaties for the education of Princes written in 17th-century France merely from a chronological and factual perspective, focusing on their codes and norms only, we shall find nothing adventurous about them. However, if we choose to put that period in the wider historical context of representations and mental realities, a rich educational imagery is then conjured up to be studied and interpreted, with adventure as a most useful focus to examine how the formative years of Louis XIII and Louis XIV were perceived at the time, how they were then turned into meaningful “signs”. Two vivid and colourful narratives have thus gone down in history; these are stories fraught with many exciting events which have drawn a double portrait of the Bourbon dynasty: that of Louis XIII, who was an adventurous king, and that of Louis XIV, who was both a king and an adventurer. |
