| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa présente étude concerne les configurations que peut prendre l’opposition entre masculin et féminin en contexte non occidental, à savoir en Polynésie occidentale. Elle montre que, loin d’une simple opposition binaire, l’opposition entre masculin et féminin s’organise en différents niveaux d’oppositions complémentaires et forme différents types de relations. Une telle analyse nécessite un retour critique sur les catégories mobilisées dans une perspective comparative : ici, en effet, la distinction de sexe renvoie moins à des réalités biologiques ou ontologiques, qu’à des relations et à des formes de pérennisation qui impliquent des déploiements spatiaux et temporels différents. |

| Summary, etc. | Male/female opposition in Wallis Island (Western Polynesia)This paper examines different configurations of the male/female opposition in western Polynesia, in a remote non western cultural and social context. It shows that, being far from simple, the opposition between male and female is organized at several levels of complementary oppositions and generates different types of relationships. Such an approach needs a critical outlook at the analytical categories used in such a comparative perspective: gender distinction are not so much based on biological or ontological realities than on relationships and forms of perpetuation that imply different unfolding of time and space. |
