| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes ressources du sud continental et de l’archipel nordique ont constitué des atouts considérables pour le Canada depuis des siècles. La devise du pays a mari usque ad mare, « d’un océan à l’autre », a servi de fondement quasi identitaire justifiant le renforcement de l’arrimage des territoires, des îles et des populations nordiques aux régions du Sud. Le Canada a aménagé et modernisé, depuis deux siècles, de grandes infrastructures permettant les échanges internationaux de fret (en vrac ou conteneurisé). D’importantes questions sont en jeux, non seulement dans les régions les plus peuplées des littoraux méridionaux, mais aussi dans les vastes régions du nord où la souveraineté canadienne est défiée par les ambitions des autres États nordiques et par les compagnies maritimes internationales. |

| Summary, etc. | Canadian shores at stake in a changing WorldCanadian mainland and northern archipelago resources have been a major asset for Canada in the past centuries. Based on the well-known motto a mari usque ad mare, from sea to sea, the Canadian governments since World War II has developed a major interest in fastening northern lands, islands and people to the southern core of the country. Canada’s economy and industry have developed and modernized considerable infrastructures for at least two centuries for both national and international shipping of cargo and containers. Major issues are also at stake, not only in the most populated areas of the country but also in vast northern areas where Canada’s sovereignty is challenged by other arctic countries and by the economic interests of international shipping companies. |
