| Summary, etc. | Les villes moyennes alimentent régulièrement le débat public et la recherche géographique. La récurrence dans le temps de politiques dédiées aux villes moyennes invite à leur mise en perspective historique. Il s’agit toutefois de comprendre comment articuler une histoire de longue durée de l’armature urbaine française et une histoire plus contemporaine de la politique publique des villes moyennes. Saisir les villes moyennes dans la durée pose la question des limites du transfert disciplinaire d’un concept issu du vocabulaire des aménageurs et des géographes à l’histoire. Inversement une analyse de la politique des villes moyennes qui ne prendrait en compte que les politiques contractuelles nées sous l’égide de la Datar et de l’Équipement dans les années 1970 court le risque du contresens sur les temporalités du changement urbain. |

| Summary, etc. | Medium size towns have historyMedium-size towns regularly feed a public debate and urban and geographical researches. The perpetual reccurence of public policies dedicated to medium-size town’s planning is an invitation to put them in a historical perspective. However, we have to articulate the long-term history of French urban system and the more contemporary history of town and coutry planning. It asks the question of the limits of crossover between geography and history. The concept of medium-size towns was created during the sixties by planners and geographers. It happears to be difficult to use it in the case of urban history, especially for the periods of pre-industry. In the opposite, an analysis of medium-size towns policy which only considers the contractual policies born during the seventies will probably go on to a nonsense about history of urban change. |
