| Summary, etc. | Ce texte a pour objectif de faire le point sur les grandes questions qui préoccupent les historiens lorsqu’ils abordent des thèmes liés au paysage et à l’environnement. D’une part, il s’agit d’exploiter la richesse heuristique des deux concepts pour les différencier mais aussi de comprendre ce qui les rapproche. Se posent en particulier la question du dualisme Nature et Culture et celle de l’opposition jugée factice entre les représentations et la réalité physique de l’environnement. En outre, le récit historique est toujours confronté à celui des origines comme si l’histoire était réductible à une opération de généalogie. Les choix épistémologiques qui en découlent servent à la partition du champ de recherche mais aussi à légitimer des positions de pouvoir. L’histoire environnementale est toute entière traversée par de tels enjeux qu’il s’agit impérativement de clarifier. |

| Summary, etc. | Landscape and environment in History : how to get rid of confusionsThe aim of this text is to give an overview of questions that are central for historians when discussing topics related to landscape and environment. On the one hand, the article explores the heuristic suitability of these two concepts in order to differentiate them as well as understand what they have in common. Key questions are for example the duality nature/culture and the opposition (deemed factitious) between representations and physical reality of environment. Furthermore, historical narratives are always related to narratives of origins, as if history could be reduced to a matter of genealogy. Epistemological choices that derive from these positions lead to the partition of research field, as well as to legitimizing positions of power within institutions. Such questions are central to environmental history and it is crucial to clarify them. |
