| Summary, etc. | Comprendre l’évolution de l’espace géographique nécessite de définir un cadre conceptuel qui permette d’observer cet espace dans le temps et de formaliser des hypothèses sur les processus sous-jacents à son changement. Un premier enjeu consiste à construire les objets d’intérêt en distinguant l’objet conceptuel sur lequel porte l’interrogation et l’objet empirique correspondant (une ville ou un espace scolaire ne sont pas des entités directement observables). L’enjeu suivant est opératoire. Il s’agit de mettre en place une démarche modélisatrice qui permette d’explorer les données, d’analyser la structure du phénomène en jeu (traitements statistiques) et de tester des hypothèses sur les facteurs du changement (modèles de simulation). Dans la pratique ces différentes étapes ne se succèdent pas de manière linéaire. Elles donnent lieu à de nombreux aller-retour et offrent plusieurs points de vue sur le phénomène étudié. |

| Summary, etc. | Understanding the evolution of a geographical space needs defining a conceptual framework which allows to observe space in time and to formalize hypotheses on the processes underlying change. A first challenge consists in building the objects of interest, by distinguishing the conceptual object which is the base for the scientific question and the corresponding empirical object (a city or scholar space are not directly observable entities). Following challenge is operative. It consists in setting up an approach for exploring data, analyzing the structure of the studied phenomenon (statistical treatments) and testing hypotheses on the factors of change (simulation models). In practice these different steps do not follow each other in a linear way. They give rise to many go and return and provide a variety of points of view on a given phenomenon. |
