Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | As an inveterate traveller, French composer Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921), did not just travel all over the world on the occasion of his 179 travels, but he also travelled regularly in France from the onset of his career around 1870, until his death in 1921. It is possible to build a geography-testimony of the involvement of Saint-Saëns in the making of a national identity for more than 136 journeys Saint-Saëns made when he visited 62 French cities. While he promoted an aesthetic order (for the École française de musique) and a political order (as a agent of the establishment of a Republican regime), Saint-Saëns acquired the status of a « National composer », in particular because he travelled all over France. Saint-Saëns used the strategy, political in nature, of being present, as he represented the figure of the academic and honoured musician by excellence, provided that he was little attracted by the regionalist fashion in music. His tour de France faced collective issues where the political utility of music was debated, a political utility which required multiple and diverse spatial anchorages. |
