| Summary, etc. | Dans les entrepôts de la grande distribution alimentaire, les ouvriers manutentionnaires travaillent avec un casque audio sur les oreilles et un micro devant la bouche. C’est une voix numérique qui leur indique les tâches à réaliser et ils valident chacun des gestes effectués par reconnaissance vocale, en prononçant des mots clés. Lorsqu’on les interroge sur le contenu de leur travail, ils ne manquent pas de se comparer à des « robots », dépossédés de leur capacité à agir en dehors du script imposé. Les observateurs extérieurs en font souvent de même, sidérés par ce dialogue étrange entre un outil numérique et des humains qui répondent à ses injonctions. Si cette conception de la « robotisation » n’est pas satisfaisante au regard de l’enquête menée en immersion dans les entrepôts, l’analyse critique de cette terminologie et de ses ressorts symboliques amène un éclairage nouveau sur la façon dont le monde ouvrier est perçu et se perçoit. |

| Summary, etc. | In food retail warehouses, handlers work with headphones on their ears and microphones in front of their mouth. A digital voice tells them what they have to do and they validate all their actions pronouncing key words for the voice recognition system. When asked about the content of their work, they compare themselves to “robots,” lacking the capacity to act outside the imposed framework. Outside observers often borrow this comparison to express their astonishment in reaction to this unusual dialogue between a digital tool and humans following orders. The results of my fieldwork show that such a vision of robotization is not appropriate. I analyze how this symbolic terminology of workers’ perception and self-perception is used and the questions it raises, thereby proposing a new approach of the working-class image. |
