| Summary, etc. | Par sa population, Adana est un des départements les plus peuplés (2,2 millions d’habitants en 2021) et des plus actifs de Turquie. Situé au sud du pays, à l’articulation entre Anatolie et Proche-Orient, Adana, réputée pour sa plaine agricole de la Çukurova qui fut mise en valeur autour de la culture du coton à partir de la fin du xixe siècle, demeure passablement sous-étudiée. Le tableau proposé ici entend faire le point à la fois sur les ressorts du dynamisme de ce territoire périphérique et contrasté désormais bien connecté au reste de l’Anatolie, au sud-est du pays, comme à l’Irak du Nord et au Caucase sud, sur l’originalité et la diversité de son peuplement. Par-là, il s’agit de faire ressortir ce que ce cas révèle à la fois des transformations enregistrées par les modes de développement de la Turquie contemporaine et leurs conséquences, et des spécificités d’un territoire méditerranéen marqué par d’intenses conflits pour l’usage du sol. |

| Summary, etc. | By its population, Adana is one of the most densely populated provinces (with 2.2 million inhabitants in 2021) and one of the most active in Turkey. Located in the south-east of the country, at the junction between the Anatolia and the Levant, Adana, renowned for its agricultural plain of the Çukurova which was developed around the cultivation of cotton from the end of the 19th century, remains fairly understudied. The table proposed here intends to take stock of the striking diversity of its population and of the grounds of the dynamism of this contrasting territory now well connected to the rest of Anatolia, as well as to northern Iraq and to the southern Caucasus. In this way, this case reveals the huge transformations recorded these last decades by the modes of development of contemporary Turkey, and in the same time the specificities of a Mediterranean territory characterized by intense conflicts for land use. |
