| Summary, etc. | Présentées en général dans la littérature scientifique comme fragiles et victimes de la métropolisation en cours, les petites villes semblent, à en croire les médias, bénéficier d’une embellie en raison de la crise sanitaire, se traduisant, en particulier, par l’arrivée de nouvelles populations. Les études scientifiques réalisées à ce jour, notamment sur les migrations résidentielles, ne montrent aucun retournement de situation claire et d’ampleur. Les plus grandes villes continuent à attirer le plus grand nombre d’habitants. Cependant la crise sanitaire à quand même remis les petites villes sur le devant de la scène, en mettant à jour, voire en révélant, leurs atouts par rapport aux évolutions socio-économiques en cours ou souhaitées (réindustrialisation, développement du télétravail, qualité de vie, maillage territorial de proximité). Ces opportunités nouvelles, ou redécouvertes, de dynamisation ne pourront se concrétiser sans relever un certain nombre de défis et valoriser (enfin !) des ressources longtemps trop discrètes (nouvelle centralité en lien avec la transition écologique, système relationnel et capacité d’intégration, nouveau récit territorial valorisant les atouts locaux). |

| Summary, etc. | Small towns are generally presented in the scientific literature as fragile and victims of the ongoing metropolisation. According to the media, they are benefiting from an upturn as a result of the covid crisis, visible by the arrival of new populations. However, the scientific studies carried out recently, particularly on residential migration, do not show any clear and significant turnaround in the situation. The biggest cities continue to attract the largest number of inhabitants. However, the sanitary crisis has put small towns back in the spotlight, by highlighting and even revealing their strengths in relation to current or desired socio-economic changes (re-industrialisation, development of teleworking, quality of life, local territorial networks). But, these new, or rediscovered, opportunities for revitalisation cannot be realised without taking up a number of challenges and (finally!) accentuating resources that have long been too discreet (new centrality in connection with the ecological transition, relational system and capacity for integration, new territorial narrative highlighting local assets). |
