520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Bodies and sexuality dominated the media and scholarly accounts of the Arab revolutions. During the first months of these uprisings the women’s bodies became a battleground for multiple Islamist, secular, feminist and securitized agendas. To this plurality of referential corresponds a plurality of bodies, as liberated, resistant and/or modest. These bodies populated cyberspace to become the locus of narratives about a revolution viewed mostly along gendered and sexualized scripts. Nevertheless, the individual assertive body reproduced through images of nude women and sexualy harrased ones, was defined through the paradigm of gender oppression versus sexual liberation. How did this focus on the assertive body marginalize the ways in which other women could only speak the language of revolution by eliminating their own bodies? I will use the concepts of micro-rebellion and legibility to analyse the significant ways in which these women interrogated the narrative of the mass revolutionary body, as either liberated or oppressed and sexualy harrassed. |
