| Summary, etc. | L’usage de la notion de « communauté homosexuelle » est courant depuis de nombreuses décennies dans les pays d’Amérique du Nord et d’Europe. D’une catégorie tout d’abord descriptive, la « communauté homosexuelle » s’est progressivement transformée en « fiction politique ». En dépit de l’évidence selon laquelle il n’existe pas de « communauté homosexuelle » à la fois homogène et aisément délimitable, voire séparable, du reste de la société, la désignation d’un groupe homosexuel supposé au travers de cette expression a des effets politiques bien « réels », en termes tant de représentation politique que de représentation de soi, chez une partie au moins des individus potentiellement concernés. Un fil historique permet ici d’éclairer les principaux enjeux du recours à la notion de « communauté homosexuelle » et de suivre leur développement finalement international. Les ressorts et les finalités de cette opération de désignation diffèrent selon les contextes et selon que la « communauté » est invoquée positivement ou stigmatisée, mais cette opération vise partout à produire, désormais à l’échelle transnationale, une catégorie publique dont la consistance supposée se heurte souvent à la diversité des expériences sociales et politiques. |

| Summary, etc. | The use of the notion of « homosexual community » has been common for many decades in North American and European countries. From an initially descriptive category, the « homosexual community » has gradually evolved into a « political fiction ». Despite the evidence that there is no such thing as a « homosexual community » that is both homogeneous and easily delimitable or even separable from the rest of society, the designation of a supposed homosexual group through this expression has very « real » political effects, both in terms of political representation and self-representation among at least some of the individuals potentially affected. A historical thread here sheds light on the main issues involved in the use of the notion of « homosexual community » and allows us to follow their ultimately international development. The motives and purposes of this designation operation differ according to the context and whether the « community » is invoked positively or stigmatized, but this operation aims everywhere to produce, now on a transnational scale, a public category whose supposed consistency often comes up against the diversity of social and political experiences. |
