| Summary, etc. | La ville des grands réseaux est-elle soluble dans la transition énergétique et dans la transition numérique ? Les villes occidentales et une large part des villes des Suds ont longtemps été approvisionnées par des grands réseaux techniques urbains (eau et énergie) centralisés, qui ont contribué à l’émergence de certaines formes urbaines. Depuis une vingtaine d’années, cette ville des réseaux est soumise à des tiraillements contradictoires : d’un côté, on observe une baisse de consommations aussi bien dans l’eau que dans l’énergie, qui remet en cause les modèles techniques, économiques et territoriaux des grands réseaux (shrinking networks) ; d’un autre, des réseaux plus décentralisés foisonnent, autour des transitions énergétiques, pour aller vers des territoires énergétiques plus locaux ; d’un autre enfin, les transitions numériques font émerger des figures comme celles des réseaux intelligents, dont l’empreinte matérielle (capteurs, data center en expansion) transforme la ville et est parfois en contradiction avec les enjeux écologiques de notre temps. Cet article se propose de revenir sur ces tiraillements concomitants, qui déstabilisent la ville des réseaux traditionnels, pour voir ce que les transitions font à la ville. |

| Summary, etc. | To what extent are urban Large Technical Systems compatible with energy and digital transitions ? Cities of the global North and a large part of the cities of the global South have long been supplied through large and centralised urban technical networks (water and energy) that contributed to the emergence of the networked city. Over the last couple of decades, one such model has been torn between conflicting and contradicting processes. On the one hand, declining demand levels in both water and energy networks are destabilising the technical, business and territorial model of these urban services (constituting “shrinking networks”); on the other hand, decentralised networks are blossoming around energy transitions to constitute more local energy territories; on another one, digital transitions are contributing to the emergence of new objects such as smart networks, whose material footprint (sensors, data centers) is transforming cities up to the contradiction with ecological issues of our times. This article details these concomitant processes that are destabilising the networked city and provides an understanding of what these transitions do to the city. |
