| Summary, etc. | Le devenir d’un genre peut-il faire époque ? Oui, répondent Drieu la Rochelle et Emmanuel Berl en 1927, au moment où l’après-guerre se retourne en avant-guerre : « Tout est foutu », dit l’un, tandis que l’autre annonce « la fin du roman ». Alors même que le « liseur de romans » triomphe, le romancier a perdu la main. Berl montre comment la crise de la mimesis naturaliste, dont les bases épistémologiques sont effondrées, mine de l’intérieur la croyance au roman chez Mauriac ou chez Proust. Il prophétise la dissolution du roman dans la poésie : l’échec des Chemins de la liberté, la féerie célinienne, la lente dérive de Gracq, ne lui ont pas donné tort. |

| Summary, etc. | 1927: Emmanuel Berl declares « the death of the novel »Is the becoming of a genre able to make epoch ? “Yes !” Drieu La Rochelle and Emmanuel Berl answer in 1927 precisely when the postwar years are turned into prewar years : “It’s over ! » the former says when the latter heralds « the death of the novel”. As the “Liseur de romans” prevails, the novelist has lost his touch. Berl shows how the crisis of the naturalist mimesis, the epistemological bases of which have collapsed, saps from within Mauriac’s or Proust’s belief in the novel. He prophesies the dissolution of the novel in poetry : the failure of Les Chemins de la liberté, the Celinian féerie, Gracq’s slow drift, have not proved him wrong. |
