| Summary, etc. | Paul et Virginie (1788) de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre occupe une place ambiguë au sein de la littérature mauricienne. Il est tantôt perçu comme le regard de la métropole sur la colonie et tantôt comme le roman fondateur de la tradition littéraire mauricienne. Arthur Martial dans son Sphinx de bronze (1935) reprend le modèle dans une démarche palimpsestique pour en réfuter l’idéologie de romantisme exotique, la structure aussi bien que les stratégies narratives. Son écriture subversive se révèle habitée de surcroît par une vision postcoloniale avant-gardiste qui explore la confrontation entre deux mondes, colonisateur et colonial, témoignant des différences irréconciliables, malgré une attirance certaine de part et d’autre. |

| Summary, etc. | Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s Paul et Virginie occupies an ambiguous position within Mauritian literature. It is sometimes perceived as the gaze of France upon the colony and otherwise as the founding novel of the Mauritian literary tradition. Arthur Martial, in his Sphinx de bronze (1935), takes up the model again in a palimpsestic approach to disprove its ideology of exotic romanticism, its structure as well as its narrative strategies. Moreover, his subversive writing reveals its avant-garde postcolonial vision which explores the confrontation between two worlds, the colonizer’s and the colonial’s, testifying to irreconcilable differences in spite of a mutual appeal from either side. |
