| Summary, etc. | On tente ici de rapprocher deux œuvres de prose narrative du xixe siècle très différentes du point de vue de leur statut, de leur longueur, de leur date et de leurs références mais très proches par la perspective qu’elles offrent sur l’art : le célèbre Chef-d’œuvre inconnu de Balzac et L'Œuvre de Zola, sorte d'épopée contradictoire de la création artistique. Les points essentiels : la fonction problématique du modèle féminin, celle de l'auteur (masculinité créatrice et autodestructrice), et le recours paradoxal à l’inachèvement dans la structure et le résultat. |

| Summary, etc. | We try here to bring close together two works in narrative prose of the nineteenth century, two works very different from the viewpoint of their status, their length, their date and their references however very similar in the prospect they offer about art: the famous Unknown Masterpiece by Balzac and The Masterpiece by Zola, a kind of contradictory epic of artistic creation. The main issues: the problematic function of the feminine model, the author’s function (creative and self-destructive manliness) and the paradoxical resort to incompletion in structure and result. |
