| Summary, etc. | Cet article questionne les interactions entre vie familiale et vie institutionnelle à partir d’une source exceptionnelle : un journal de famille tenu par un couple de pédagogues – Joséphine et Félix Bachellery – entre 1835 et 1852. Maîtresse de pensionnat réputée à Paris sous la monarchie de Juillet, Joséphine Bachellery est connue pour ses prises de position publiques en faveur d’un enseignement secondaire de filles. Le journal témoigne de la face privée de ses engagements et révèle en creux une histoire rarement abordée : ce que la famille fait à l’institution scolaire. En chroniquant la vie de famille, le journal ne peut éluder le cadre de leur vie domestique : un important pensionnat où la maîtresse de pension agit comme cheffe d’entreprise, enseignante et mère de famille. Un double questionnement sous-tend l’analyse proposée : celui de la place des liens familiaux dans le fonctionnement institutionnel et, dans un deuxième temps, la manière dont les exigences du pensionnat interviennent dans la vie familiale, mettant parfois à rude épreuve les liens affectifs entre parents et enfants. |

| Summary, etc. | This article examines the interactions between family life and institutional life from an exceptional source: a family diary kept by a couple of teachers—Joséphine and Félix Bachellery—between 1835 and 1852. A renowned boarding school teacher in Paris under the July Monarchy, Joséphine Bachellery was known for her public stance in favour of secondary education for girls. The diary bears witness to the private side of her commitments and reveals a story that is rarely told: what the family does in the educational institution. In chronicling family life, the diary cannot avoid the setting for their domestic life: a large boarding school where the headmistress acted as a business manager, a teacher and a mother. The proposed analysis looks at two questions: the place of family ties in the workings of an institution, and the way in which the demands of the boarding school interfered in family life, sometimes putting a strain on the emotional ties between parents and children. |
