| Summary, etc. | Aristote affirme que l’homme est par nature un animal politique. Thomas d’Aquin ajoute qu’il est aussi social. Or cet ajout modifie radicalement la signification de la proposition aristotélicienne. Pour l’Aquinate, l’individu humain est d’abord partie prenante de la matière sociale conçue comme multitude, et cette matière s’ordonne selon l’ordre de la raison d’une façon qui n’implique pas d’emblée la référence au politique, quoiqu’elle appelle la constitution du politique comme ordre subordonné à l’ordre de la raison. |

| Summary, etc. | Aristotle says that man is by nature a political animal. Thomas Aquinas adds that he is also social. Such an addition means a radical alteration of the Aristotelian proposition. For Aquinas, first of all, the human individual being is part of the social matter understood as multitude. And this matter is ordered by the order of reason in a way which is not immediately political, even if it requires politics as secondary order subordered to the reason. |
