| Summary, etc. | À partir du milieu du XIXe siècle et surtout pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, les enfants furent un des enjeux de l’agitation nationaliste, sociale et religieuse. La structure multireligieuse, multiethnique, multilingue de l’Empire ottoman et la désunion de l’idée de nation ont compliqué ce que les enfants ottomans représentaient. Des combats de rue aux organisations de scoutisme, des campagnes de « protection de l’enfance » à l’ouverture d’orphelinats, les enfants ottomans issus de différentes identités communales ont incorporé et reproduit la crise politique interne et les rivalités en tant qu’agents et cibles de la politique nationaliste. Fondé sur la recherche dans les dossiers de la police ottomane, la presse, les livres scolaires et les articles des organisations de jeunesse, cet article se concentre sur la politisation et la socialisation des enfants et des jeunes ottomans selon des lignes ouvertement ethniques, religieuses et nationalistes. |

| Summary, etc. | The role of the Ottoman youth in the national struggle (1914-1919)From the mid-nineteenth century onwards, and particularly during the First World War, children were one of the main stakes of nationalist, social and religious upheavals. The multi-religious, multi-ethnic, and multi-lingual structure of the Ottoman Empire as well as the divisions over the idea of nation have rendered the representation of Ottoman children more complex to apprehend. From street fights to boy scouts organizations, from child protection awareness campaigns to the creation of orphanages, Ottoman children from different communal identities embodied and reproduced the internal political crisis as agents of the latter and targets of nationalist politics. Based on research founded on Ottoman police records, the contemporary press, school books, and youth organizations’ publications, this paper focuses on the politicization and socialization of Ottoman children and youths along overtly ethnic, religious, and nationalist lines. |
