| Summary, etc. | L’article analyse les raisons et le contexte qui ont permis la transformation de la YMCA tchécoslovaque, pensée par ses promoteurs nord-américains comme un rempart contre le bolchevisme à la sortie de la Première Guerre mondiale, en un espace particulier de dialogue et de rencontre entre jeunes chrétiens et marxistes dans la seconde moitié des années 1930. Il commence par présenter la naissance du mouvement dans la jeune République, sous les auspices des cercles politiques directement liés au président Masaryk. Il s’intéresse ensuite aux outils développés par l’association pour resserrer les liens entre la société tchécoslovaque et l’Ouest anglo-saxon, principalement l’enseignement de la langue anglaise et la pratique des sports collectifs. Enfin, il s’intéresse aux évolutions à l’échelle nationale et internationale qui ont conduit la YMCA tchécoslovaque à se réorienter politiquement vers la gauche. |

The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Interwar CzechoslovakiaThe article analyses reasons and contexts that allowed the transformation of the local Czechoslovak YMCA association from the wall against Bolshevism (which was the task ascribed to it by its North American sponsors in the immediate post-World War One period) into a unique site of encounter and dialogue between young Christians and Marxists in the second half of the 1930s. It first presents the settling of the association in the newly-created republic with the support of leading political circles around president Masaryk. In the second part, it introduces the tools the association used to foster the socio-cultural bonds between this country and Anglo-Saxon West (namely the spread of knowledge of English language and collective sports). Finally, it analyses changes at both national and international levels that reoriented the Czechoslovak YMCA towards the political left. |
