| Summary, etc. | Le concept d’« extension universitaire » a connu quelques modifications au cours de l’histoire. Apparu dans l’Angleterre du xixe siècle, il indiquait un nouveau modèle universitaire, l’ extended university, étendant ses activités à la classe ouvrière issue de la révolution industrielle. Quelques décennies plus tard, ayant traversé l’Atlantique, il prenait une signification plus directement politique en Amérique latine. Le « cri de Córdoba », révolte étudiante née en Argentine, revendique pour la première fois une université plus démocratique et engagée contre les inégalités sociales. Depuis, l’« extension » a été perçue comme une nouvelle fonction de l’université, ajoutant à l’enseignement et à la recherche l’établissement d’une relation dynamique de transformation entre l’université et la société. Aujourd’hui, face à une université de plus en plus insérée dans le système du libéralisme économique, comment l’« extension universitaire » pourrait-elle servir à penser des institutions plus démocratiques ? |

| Summary, etc. | The concept of extension has undergone some changes throughout history. Envisaged in England during the nineteenth century, it indicated a new model of university that branched out its activities to the emerging working class of the Industrial Revolution. Some decades later, the concept crossed the Atlantic, gaining a new conception in Latin America. The « cry of Córdoba », a student revolt that took place in Argentina, would claim for the first time a more democratic university, engaged in a fight against social inequalities. Since then, in addition to teaching and research, the concept of extension has gained a new meaning in the university, indicating the need for a dynamic relationship between society and the academia. Nowadays, given that the university is increasingly inserted in economic liberalism, how can the extension be used to think about a more democratic institution ? |
