Summary, etc. | L’article se propose de rendre compte, dans son évolution, des caractéristiques de la politique française de scolarisation des élèves issus de l’immigration et/ou appartenant à des minorités. La préoccupation constante de l’intégration dans la communauté nationale, seule communauté légitime dans le modèle républicain « à la française », tend, non sans illusion, à accorder la priorité de cette fonction à la scolarisation. En conséquence, les altérités sociales, culturelles, langagières sont déniées ou refoulées dans des espaces marginalisés, à l’exemple des enseignements de langue et de culture d’origine (ELCO). En dépit de tentatives de réformes, la crainte des communautarismes s’oppose d’autant plus à un traitement positif du bilinguisme et de la diversité culturelle qu’ils sont portés par des groupes sociaux au statut dévalué. |

Summary, etc. | The social stakes of bilingualism in French schools This article seeks to account for the characteristics of French school policies as they have evolved over the years regarding the children of immigrant or minority groups. The constant preoccupation with integrating them into the national community, the only community that has any legitimacy in the Republican model “à la française”, tends – though it is somewhat of an illusion – to attribute the main responsibility for that integration to school. Consequently, different social, cultural and linguistic identities are denied or pushed into the margins of the system, as is the case for instance with the teaching of languages and cultures of origin (ELCO program). Despite numerous attempts to reform the system, the fear that community identities will strengthen runs against any positive treatment of bilingualism and cultural diversity, since the latter are identified with low-status groups. |
