| Summary, etc. | Il est parvenu jusqu’à nous un nombre considérable de pamphlets politiques, distribués à Paris aux XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles, dans lesquels les auteurs imitent le parler vernaculaire des basses classes afin de ridiculiser les grands. La valeur de ces documents a longtemps été soit sous-estimée soit mal comprise. Il convient de ne pas lire ces textes comme s’il s’agisssait de données vernaculaires authentiques, mais cela n’empêche qu’ils incorporent bon nombre de formes vernaculaires (phonétiques, morphologiques, syntaxiques, lexicales), et que, étudiés chronologiquement, ils offrent un précieux baromètre de la saillance relative des variables en présence. Des renseignements sociaux de ce type nous sont d’une grande valeur dans nos tentatives de mieux comprendre le processus de changement linguistique en cours durant cette période. |

| Summary, etc. | Historical sociolinguistics. The Sarcelades from Nicolas Jouin There survives from 17th-18th-century Paris a significant number of ephemeral political pamphlets written in a style imitating low-class vernacular speech and ridiculing the activities of members of the establishment. The linguistic value of these texts has hitherto been minimised or misunderstood. Although they must not be read as authentic vernacular data, this study shows that they embody a large number of authentic vernacular forms (phonetic, morphological, syntactic, lexical) and, studied chronologically, provide a valuable barometer of their salience, as this evolves across time. Social information of this type is of great value as we try to understand the process of linguistic change in Parisian French over this period. |
