| Summary, etc. | Alors qu’ailleurs en Afrique, plusieurs dictionnaires monolingues ont déjà été publiés, rien de tel n’a été accompli au Nigeria, où les ouvrages bilingues dominent encore en dépit d’un siècle de travaux sur les langues du pays. Le but de cette étude est de présenter l’activité lexicographique dans le domaine igbo et ses implications, à partir d’une synthèse historique, et de formuler un bref panorama de la politique linguistique locale, tout en éclairant les liens entre le secteur de l’éducation, la diaspora igbo et la production de dictionnaires. |

| Summary, etc. | nigeria: a Century of Bilingual Igbo dictionaries While monolingual dictionaries of African languages are being developed and published, Nigeria, after more than a century of linguistic endeavours, cannot boast of any such publications, as bilingual dictionaries still dominate the field. This study provides a much needed historic survey of Igbo dictionary work, briefly considers the local linguistic policy adopted and its consequences, and pleads in favour of the production of monolingual dictionaries that will benefit from the established relationship between the Nigerian educational sector and its Diaspora. |
