520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | This article aims to provide an understanding of the importance and the role automata have in Diderot’s writings. It starts by analysing the admiration Diderot has for Vaucanson, especially for his automaton “The Flute Player”: the author’s admiration does not only encompass his fascination for Vaucanson’s technical prowess, but also pertains to the conception of the automaton as an operating model. Taking this assertion as a starting point, a precise identification of its function in Diderot’s thought is possible. Even though it is a machine, the automaton fulfils a rather complex role in Diderot’s writings: first, it allows a mechanistic and organic explanation of nature. Second, as a simulacrum of the human body, it stimulates the imagination through its physical presence. Third, it works as a mediator between other figures used by Diderot in order to model his conception of the human body, particularly with regard to the figures of the puppet, the marionette or the harpsichord. |
