520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This article discusses simulacra with human appearance evoked in La Religieuse by Diderot. The term “simulacrum” is used in order to describe painted images, particularly portraits, and accentuates the crucial opposition between those images that leave us unmoved and those that affect us. The article aims to show the relations between the different simulacra and to provide an understanding of the meaning of these images by focusing on the following key issues: the militant and poignant novel articulates with the paradoxes which thwart and complicate the novel’s structuring oppositions (freedom/alienation; passive innocent/active persecutors; naivety/seduction, and so forth), however, without abolishing these contrasts. The image of “Suzanne-automaton” is associated with the representation of alienation, starting with the vows, which the character pronounces while being “physically alienated”, and ending with the mechanical repetition of the gestures adopted in the convent, which she even pursues after escaping from the latter. Diderot’s novel-writing makes it necessary, at this point, to wonder not only at the ambivalent seduction of “Suzanne-painted image”, but also about the power of “Suzanne-simulator”, i.e. “Suzanne-pantomime”. The comparisons with a statue finally emphasize both the character’s and the narrator’s problematic attitude towards desire. Although Suzanne’s reduction to a simulacrum suggests the loss of self to which the character seems to be condemned, the reinforcement of the simulacrum by “Suzanne-picture” and “Suzanne-pantomime” simultaneously demonstrates a certain resistance to that loss.
