| Summary, etc. | Dans La dialectique de la raison, Horkheimer et Adorno utilisent un concept large et transhistorique « d’ Aufklärung », en la faisant remonter à l’Antiquité et en la définissant comme la pensée qui libère les hommes de la crainte de la nature à travers sa domination. La domination de la nature devient nécessairement domination de soi et des autres hommes ; le concept d’ Aufklärung est dialectique parce qu’il contient les germes de son autodestruction. Cependant, les usages que les auteurs font de Hobbes dans La dialectique de la raison révèlent l’ambivalence des « Lumières ». D’une part, ils montrent que sa théorie absolutiste manifeste la tendance autoritaire de la raison. D’autre part, ils mettent au jour la puissance critique de sa philosophie : son hypothèse de l’état de nature dévoile les antagonismes qui sévissent au sein de la société bourgeoise capitaliste. La lucidité de Hobbes, l’un des « écrivains sombres de la bourgeoisie », est un signe de l’existence des potentialités critiques propres à l’ Aufklärung. |

| Summary, etc. | In Dialectic of Enlightenment, Horkheimer and Adorno make use of a wide and transhistorical concept of “Aufklärung”; the latter dates back to Antiquity and is defined as the thought liberating human beings from the fear of nature through its domination. This domination becomes necessarily self-domination and domination of other human beings. The concept of Aufklärung is dialectical because it contains the germs of its self-destruction. However, when the authors mention Hobbes in Dialectic of Enlightenment, they reveal the ambivalence of the “Enlightenment”. On the one hand, they show that his absolutist theory expresses the authoritarian trend of the reason. On the other hand, they bring to light the critical power of his philosophy: his hypothesis of the natural condition unveils antagonisms in the bourgeois and capitalist society. Hobbes’ lucidity, one of the “dark writers of the bourgeoisie”, indicates the existence of critical potentialities of the Aufklärung. |
