| Summary, etc. | Depuis les années 1940, le terme Lumières et ses équivalents dans différentes langues se sont imposés dans le lexique international de façon exponentielle. Mais ce succès apparent cache de grandes différences de définition selon les écoles historiques et les pays. Il importe donc de comprendre pourquoi les historiens ne parviennent pas à s’entendre sur une période, une aire géographique et une signification principale. En outre, alors que chaque pays semble vouloir affirmer l’existence de ses propres Lumières, ce mouvement est de plus en plus souvent accusé d’être à l’origine de l’eurocentrisme. |

But this apparent success hides big differences in definition between historical schools and countries. It is thus important to understand why historians can not agree on a period, a geographical area and a main meaning. Furthermore, as each country seems to want to claim its own Enlightenment, this intellectual current is increasingly accused of being at the root of eurocentrism. |
