520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In this article, I propose to qualify our representation of the opposition between the radicalism attributed to Spinoza, and the leibnizian “spirit of moderation”. To do so, I study Leibniz’s legacy in the 18th  century, and more specifically two examples taken from the French materialist corpus, by exploring the role of concepts, arguments or images originated from the leibnizian philosophy. Firstly, I show that in d’Holbach’s Système de la nature (1770), the principle of sufficient reason is interpreted in order to build the determinist and necessitarianist thesis (that is to say both causal and modal unity of nature). Secondly, I study how La Mettrie uses the pre-established harmony hypothesis to build the materialist idea of the material unity of man. Indeed, by insisting on the perfect correlation between states of mind and states of body, the pre-established harmony tends to remove the need of a distinction between mind and body. By analyzing such uses of Leibniz’s philosophy in the 18th century, I aim to highlight its radical potential.
