520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Most of the philosophical debates on simulacra during the 18th century are characterized by a binary structure. Replica or original, just appearance or true being, imitated or real? Denis Diderot transforms this binary system into an opaque one of mixed and intermediary positions and at the same time develops an idiosyncratic concept of authenticity. Diderot grasps authenticity not as the contrasting juxtaposition to simulacra, representation and imitation, but rather thinks of it as a condition attainable only through conscious and concentrated re-enactment(s). In contrast to Diderot, Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s response to the universal indefiniteness of human beings is of a normative-philosophical nature by devising and demanding authenticity to restore the boundary between the genuine and the fake, the trustworthy and the deceitful as a social dimension. Diderot on the other hand philosophically keeps at the search for (self-)knowledge, the path to which he understands as demanding and intricate.
