520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This essay traces the interconnections between two diagrams that were published just four years apart at the beginning of the 18th century. The first is the world-renowned colour-mixing wheel of Isaac Newton, and the second is a diagram comprised of two rings which appeared in a handbook on pastel painting. The technique of pastel painting rose in popularity during the second half of the 17th century, when Newton was starting to investigate the phenomenon of colour. Both schemes have undisputed significance in the development of circular diagrams for artists, and they have often been linked to each other. This essay strengthens this connection by illustrating how Newton’s experiments with pigment powders – especially their evolution from the 1670s to the publication of Opticks – could have been inspired by pastel painting as well as how, for the same reason, his colour circle could have been perceived as intimately connected to his powder experiments and thus to pastel painting.
