| Summary, etc. | Que signifie l’expression « intégration linguistique » ? L’objectif de cet article est de cerner ce que l’on entend par « intégration linguistique » dans les discours institutionnels et scientifiques pour, ensuite, en proposer une définition précise afin de renforcer la pertinence de son utilisation dans le champ de la sociolinguistique. Notre hypothèse principale est que cette expression ne « dit » pas, dans tous les sens du terme, ce qu’elle signifie. D’une part, l’analyse linguistique de cette locution permet de conclure que sa composition sémantique contribue à entretenir le mythe du rôle primordial et suffisant de la langue dans les processus d’intégration. D’autre part, les sens des occurrences de cette expression observés dans les discours académiques et institutionnels montrent qu’ils varient très fortement selon les utilisateurs et les contextes sociopolitiques dans lesquels ils apparaissent sans qu’ils ne soient clairement définis. Ce manque d’assises théoriques entraînerait une utilisation imprécise et marquée. En se basant sur ces différents éléments d’analyse discursive et linguistique, nous proposons que l’expression « intégration linguistique », dans les recherches scientifiques, soit restreinte au seul contexte micro, celui où les individus en situation de mobilité expriment, racontent comment la/les langue/s a/ont été un élément, une entrave, un objet de désir ou de rejet dans leurs processus d’intégration. |

| Summary, etc. | Calling into question ‘linguistic integration’ What does the expression ‘linguistic integration’ mean? The object of this article is to explore its meaning in institutional and scientific discourse, with the aim of bringing it a precise definition able to improve its appropriateness in the field of sociolinguistics. The main hypothesis is that the expression does not ‘say’ what it means, in all the meanings of that word. Firstly, linguistic analysis hows that the semantic make-up of the phrase contributes to maintaining the myth of language’s primordial, selfstanding rôle in the processes of integration. Secondly, the meanings of the expression’s occurrences in academic and institutional discourse show strong variation among users and among the sociopolitical contexts in which they appear without clear definition. This lack of theoretical anchoring leads to usage which is both imprecise and marked. Drawing on the foregoing discursive and linguistic analysis, we propose that within scientific research the expression ‘linguistic integration’ be restricted to the micro context, in which migrants express and recount how one or more languages have been an factor, a barrier, an object of desire or of rejection in their processes of integration. |
