| Summary, etc. | La présence britannique dans le Golfe s’établit au XVIIe siècle. L’engagement politique bientôt suivi des intérêts commerciaux et d’une relation « protecteur-protégé » mutuellement bénéfique se mettent en place entre la Grande-Bretagne et les États du Golfe. Alors qu’il les protège en tant que groupes politiques, le gouvernement britannique ne fait pas et n’a jamais voulu faire des États du Golfe des protectorats au sens formel du terme, qui conduiraient leurs affaires extérieures. Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l’attention de la Grande-Bretagne se tourne vers les efforts pétroliers et de modernisation dans le Golfe. Même après son retrait en 1971, le rôle régional de la Grande-Bretagne est resté loin d’être inactif. La Grande-Bretagne a réussi, dans l’ère post- Pax Britannica, à reformuler ses relations avec les États du Golfe sur la base de liens économiques solides. |

| Summary, etc. | British Presence in the Gulf: From its Genesis to the Withdrawal in 1971British presence in the Gulf was first established in the 17th century. Political involvement soon followed commercial interests and a mutually beneficial protector-protégé relationship was established between Britain and the Gulf states. Whilst protecting them as political units, the British Government never made the Gulf states into protectorates in the formal sense of the word, yet conducted their external affairs. In the aftermath of World War II, Britain’s focus turned to Gulf oil and modernization efforts. Even after its withdrawal in 1971, Britain’s regional role remained far from inactive. Consequently, Britain has succeeded in reformulating its relations with the Gulf states in the post- Pax Britannica era on the basis of strong economic ties. |
