| Summary, etc. | Le monde arabe a longtemps été considéré comme l’« exception » aux processus de démocratisation que le monde a connus depuis des décennies. Les orientalistes et néoorientalistes ont soutenu l’idée que l’islam et la démocratie étaient incompatibles et que, par conséquent, il ne fallait pas s’attendre à des changements dans cette région, condamnée à vivre sous des régimes despotiques qui, somme toute, sont le produit logique de cette religion. Les événements dans le monde arabe depuis le début de 2011 ont démontré qu’une telle analyse était fausse et que les sociétés arabes sont non seulement capables de changer, mais qu’elles peuvent aussi servir d’exemple à d’autres sociétés. |

Orientalists and neo-orientalists supported the idea that Islam and democracy were incompatible and that therefore one should not expect much change in this region, condemned to live under despotic regimes, which, after all, are the logical product of that religion. Events unfolding in the Arab world since early 2011 have discredited such an analysis; they have shown that Arab societies are not only able to change, but they can also serve as an example to other societies. |
