| Summary, etc. | Cette contribution examine deux défis centraux de la sociolinguistique, celui de se faire entendre au-delà de son inscription disciplinaire historique, et celui de sa capacité à faire sens des savoirs produits en dehors de son champ et nécessaires à la compréhension des phénomènes langagiers en société. Ces défis soulignent une tension au cœur même des logiques disciplinaires ; ces dernières permettent certes de produire un savoir légitime et probablement structurant, mais créent par ailleurs des carcans qui empêchent et conditionnent la production même de ce savoir. On examine ces défis sous l’angle des rapports complexes qu’entretient la sociolinguistique avec les sciences sociales. On montre comment les inscriptions disciplinaires de la sociolinguistique informent la production du savoir, ses limites et plus spécifiquement l’ambivalence du positionnement de la sociolinguistique face aux sciences sociales. On décrit des initiatives, des alternatives aux façonnements départementaux ou disciplinaires, qui sont emblématiques de zones de contacts productives entre les sciences du langage et les sciences sociales. Finalement on se penche sur l’effacement temporaire des logiques disciplinaires et sur la manière dont des rencontres intellectuelles nous invitent à étendre notre compréhension et du social et du linguistique. |

| Summary, etc. | Social Sciences and Sociolinguistics: Disciplines, Alternatives, Conversations and Criticisms This paper examines two major challenges faced by sociolinguistics, that of making itself heard beyond its historic disciplinary inscription, and that of its ability to make sense of the knowledge produced outside of its field–knowledge required to understand linguistic phenomena in society. These challenges highlight a tension at the very heart of disciplinary logics; they certainly allow for the production of legitimate and in all likelihood structured knowledge, but otherwise they create constraints that prevent and influence the very production of this knowledge. We examine these challenges by looking at the complex relationships that sociolinguistics has with the social sciences. We show how the disciplinary inscriptions of sociolinguistics inform knowledge production, its limits, and, more specifically, the uncertainty of the positioning of sociolinguistics in relation to the social sciences. We outline initiatives, alternatives to departmental or disciplinary structures, that represent areas of productive contact between language sciences and the social sciences. Finally, we look at the temporary eradication of disciplinary logics and the way in which intellectual convergences invite us to broaden our understanding of both social matters and linguistics. |
