Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Should We Be Done with “Linguistic Ideologies”? This article begins with the observation that the concept of linguistic ideologies is being used increasingly often without being truly problematized or justified. Is this concept simply a buzzword, in which case should we abandon it? This text attempts to show that the current usage of linguistic ideologies does not in general derive from a conceptualization originating from European critical sociology, but from a semiotic and anthropological reflection whose origins date back to the 1970s and to the re-reading of the work of C. S. Peirce. In showing the possibilities offered by this semiotics, especially in terms of taking objects in their materiality into consideration, this article proposes that the concept of linguistic ideologies should be retained–provided that it is accompanied by serious thought on its usage. It is only under this condition that the term will not be considered as simply a synonym of “representations” or “ideas”. |
