| Summary, etc. | Stress, emotional fatigue and secondary traumatic stress are terms that appear in discussions of burnout. The author defines these terms and provides a response to the question whether pastoral ministers working in health care are prone to burnout. She then goes on to describe a number of causes and factors likely to give rise to burnout by taking the perspective of the individual pastoral minister, the context of the health care organization and the relationship to the Church community. The article gives only a succinct presentation of the treatment of burnout. The latter generally goes hand in hand with taking time off from work, rest and some form of therapy. The author focuses instead mainly on prevention, and takes as an example the Caritas vicariate in Bruges, Belgium. Prevention of burnout rests upon a healthy personal life, sound organization of work and a relationship of encouragement with the Church community. |
