| Summary, etc. | Résumé Les archéologues, dans leurs fouilles, sont confrontés dans les strates les plus superficielles du sol aux traces de la Grande Guerre : ils y trouvent cadavres, munitions, structures bétonnées. Étudiant le cas concret de l’Aisne, lieu de nombreux combats, l’auteur montre que ce qui est exhumé reste de peu d’intérêt historique, la coopération des archéologues et historiens aidant plus au travail de mémoire (identification des corps retrouvés) qu’à l’approfondissement des connaissances sur la vie au front. |

| Summary, etc. | During excavations, archaeologists are confronted with traces of World War I remaining in the uppermost strata: corpses, munitions, concrete structures. With the case study of the Aisne, once the scene of fierce fighting, the author shows that the material exhumed is of little historical interest. Cooperation between archaeologists and historians contributes more to memorial work (identification of retrieved bodies) than to deepening our knowledge of life on the front lines. |
