| Summary, etc. | La IIe République espagnole semblait destinée à résoudre, entre autres problèmes, la vieille question de la coexistence religieuse qui avait tant troublé l’Espagne contemporaine. Jusqu’en avril 1931, l’intransigeance de l’Église catholique fut le principal obstacle à l’instauration de la liberté religieuse par l’État dans les dispositions constitutionnelles et législatives. Après cette date, la solution finalement adoptée par la nouvelle majorité républicaine fut si radicale qu’elle ne servit qu’à enflammer davantage le conflit entre les catholiques et les laïques. Il aurait pu en être autrement si les propositions des uns et des autres qui misaient sur des formules distinctes avaient été prises en considération, propositions puisant leur source dans un idéal de tolérance plus large ou, du moins, s’appuyant sur la nécessité d’apporter une réponse au défi imposé par cette circonstance historique unique en montrant une plus grande ouverture d’esprit. |

| Summary, etc. | Republican secularism: religious toleration and intolerance in the Second Spanish RepublicThe Second Republic seemed set to solve, among many other problems, the old religious question that had so disrupted peaceful coexistence among Spaniards in contemporary times. Until April 1931, the intransigence of the Catholic church had been the principal obstacle to the inclusion in Spain’s constitutional and legislative order of statutes that would assure genuine religious freedom. After that date, the solution finally adopted by the new republican majority was so radical that it simply further embittered the existing conflict between Catholics and secularists. Things might however have been different if heed had been paid to proposals from either side advocating other formulas inspired by an ideal of broad-based tolerance, or at the very least prompted by the need to rise to the challenge posed by so unique a historical circumstance by evincing a greater willingness to compromise. |

| Summary, etc. | La Segunda República parecía destinada a resolver, entre otros muchos problemas, la vieja cuestión religiosa que tanto había perturbado la convivencia de los españoles en la época contemporánea. Hasta abril de 1931 la intransigencia de la Iglesia católica había sido el principal impedimento para introducir en el ordenamiento constitucional y legislativo español de preceptos que asegurasen una auténtica libertad religiosa. Después de esta fecha, la solución finalmente adoptada por la nueva mayoría republicana fue de una radicalidad tal que no hizo sino enconar aún más el conflicto ya existente entre católicos y laicistas. Pudo haber sido de otra manera, sin embargo, si se hubieran escuchado las propuestas que, desde las filas de unos y otros, abogaban por otras fórmulas, inspiradas en un ideal de amplia tolerancia o, cuando menos, inducidas por la necesidad de responder al desafío de tan singular circunstancia histórica demostrando un mayor grado de transigencia. |
